What to Wear in Tel Aviv — The PP Wardrobe

On Tel Aviv's seafront, restaurant scene, and design culture — the natural linen wardrobe for the Mediterranean's most active city.

Tel Aviv has one of the most distinctive dress cultures of any Mediterranean city. The combination of intense heat, beach proximity, a highly design-conscious population, and a social scene that runs from rooftop bars to gallery openings to late beachfront dinners creates a wardrobe challenge that rewards natural fabric and considered dressing.

The climate is the starting point. Tel Aviv in summer — June through September — sustains temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius with moderate humidity from the Mediterranean coast. The city is physically active and outdoors-oriented in a way that European resort cities typically are not. The wardrobe needs to perform in sustained heat while remaining composed enough for the city's notably stylish social and dining scenes.

For the beachfront and the promenade: Tel Aviv's Tayelet — the long seafront promenade running from Jaffa to the northern beaches — is one of the world's great urban beach walks. A PP linen shirt in white or a light natural, open, with linen shorts or swim shorts, carries the morning and early afternoon correctly. The beach clubs along Gordon and Frishman have a standard that is casual but notably stylish.

For the city's restaurant and bar scene: Tel Aviv's dining scene is internationally regarded, and the evening standard in the White City and the areas around Rothschild Boulevard and Florentin reflects a population that takes both food and personal presentation seriously. A PP linen shirt in a composed colourway — navy, oyster, a warm earth tone — with linen trousers and leather shoes carries correctly from dinner at a Jaffa restaurant to drinks at a rooftop bar in the city.

For the galleries and cultural spaces: Tel Aviv's design and art scene, centred around the Neve Tzedek neighbourhood and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, has a register that rewards the garment that is thoughtful without being formal.
