What to Wear in Ras Al Khaimah
A coral-stone pearling town, mangrove creeks and a mountain road: the northern Emirates as the heat begins to ease.
South of Ras Al Khaimah city, the coral-stone houses of Jazirat Al Hamra stand roofless by the shore: a pearling and fishing town left behind in the second half of the twentieth century and now being slowly restored. It is one of the quietest places in the Emirates, and one of the most instructive about how people dressed for this climate before air conditioning: loose, long, light and natural. For anyone weighing what to wear in Ras Al Khaimah, that older logic still holds, and linen is its contemporary form.
Ras Al Khaimah is the northernmost of the seven emirates, within easy driving distance of Dubai. Its landscape changes quickly: beaches and lagoons on the coast, mangroves and creeks just inland, red desert to the south and the Hajar Mountains rising sharply to the east. October opens the comfortable season. Days are still hot, often in the mid-thirties early in the month, but the humidity begins to ease and the evenings become pleasant enough for long dinners outdoors.
“In the Gulf, the old way of dressing was the wise one: loose, long and natural.”
— Pieter Petros, founderHeritage comes first in any considered itinerary. Jazirat Al Hamra and Dhayah Fort, on its hill above the date palms to the north of the city, are places where respectful dress is expected: shoulders covered and legs covered to below the knee are the safe standard, and it is worth checking any current guidance locally. A man in the Laos Long Sleeve Linen Shirt in Beige Cream with PP Trousers 100% Linen in White is correctly dressed for both. For women, the PP linen blouse in Sky Blue, long sleeved with a curved hem, worn with wide trousers or a long skirt, gives the same ease in the heat of the afternoon.
The mangroves are the surprise. Along the creeks near the city, kayak routes thread through quiet channels where herons stand in the shallows and the water is still in the early morning. Paddling means getting wet, so PP swim shorts in Black or Sapphire Blue go in the kayak, with a dry Male Linen Shirt in Blue kept in a waterproof bag for the café afterwards. Women will find the Linen Ladies Set in Sky Blue easy for the same breakfast by the water once the paddling is done.
Jebel Jais is the other half of the emirate. The mountain road climbs in long switchbacks to viewing platforms near the summit, where the air is noticeably cooler than on the coast. In October that difference is welcome rather than chilling, but a long sleeve helps after sunset. The Bliss Linen Shirt in Dark Blue with PP Casual Linen Trousers in Black suits a dinner at altitude and the drive back down in the dark.
Most of the week, though, is spent on the coast, at the beach resorts of Al Marjan Island and Al Hamra. Days by the pool and the sea ask for swim shorts and a light shirt over them for lunch. Evenings at the resort restaurants are relaxed but polished. Here the Amelia linen dress shirt in Coral Orange, with leather sandals and a fine gold bracelet, looks entirely right, and a man in the Vibes Linen Shirt in Orchid, oversized and shorter in the body, with PP Trousers 100% Linen in Sapphire Blue, is dressed for the same table.
The case for linen in this part of the world is a simple one. Flax fibre lets air pass through the weave and does not cling when the skin is warm, which is why linen and loose cotton have been worn across hot climates for thousands of years. In a place where the afternoon still touches thirty-five degrees, that matters more than any detail of style.
The landscape here runs from pale sand to red dune to grey mountain stone, and the light at either end of the day is warm. Natural tones, Beige Cream, Vanille and White, sit quietly within it, while a single saturated colour, Coral Orange or Orchid, reads well at night against white walls and lantern light. A wardrobe built on two or three neutrals and one colour covers the week without strain.
At Jazirat Al Hamra, late in the afternoon, the coral stone takes on the colour of oatmeal and the shadows lengthen across the empty lanes. It is the right hour to be there, and the right moment to be wearing something that belongs to the same palette.
