Packing linen shirts correctly makes the difference between arriving with wearable garments and arriving with a case full of creased fabric that needs extensive ironing before any of it is usable. The good news: linen is more forgiving than most people expect when packed correctly, and the natural crease of linen in a resort context reads as appropriate rather than careless.

The rolling method. Roll rather than fold. Lay the shirt face down, fold the sleeves across the back, then roll from the collar toward the hem as tightly as possible without stretching the fabric. Rolled linen shirts take up less space than folded alternatives and arrive with fewer deep crease lines than flat-folded shirts. The rolling technique works particularly well for PP linen shirts because the weight of the fabric means the roll holds its shape without springing open.

The tissue paper method. For shirts that need to arrive as crease-free as possible, lay each shirt flat with a sheet of tissue paper between each fold. The paper prevents the sharp fold lines that direct fabric-to-fabric contact produces. This method takes more space but produces better results for shirts going directly from suitcase to dinner table.

The plastic bag trick. Place each shirt in a thin plastic bag before rolling. The plastic reduces friction between the shirt and other items in the case and prevents the transfer of crease patterns from one garment to another. Not environmentally ideal but effective for one or two key pieces.

The hotel room recovery. A linen shirt that has been in a case for several hours recovers quickly when hung in a steamy bathroom — hang it on a hanger, run the shower on hot, close the bathroom door, and leave for fifteen to twenty minutes. The steam relaxes the flax fibre and removes the majority of travel creases without ironing. Alternatively, a light mist from a water bottle and a few minutes hanging in the warm air outside produces a similar result in warm-climate destinations.

The packing list for a resort trip. Two PP linen shirts cover a five-to-seven night resort trip when washed correctly — one worn, one washed and hanging to dry, rotating through the stay. Pack light; wash as you go.
