The label "100% linen" on a shirt tells you the fabric composition but not the quality, origin, fibre length, or certification status of the linen used. Understanding what else to look for beyond the fibre percentage is the fastest route to identifying which 100% linen shirts are genuinely different from the mass-market alternatives that carry the same label.

The fibre length question. All linen is 100% flax, but not all flax fibre is the same length or quality. Long-staple flax — the variety grown in the certified corridor of northern Belgium and northern France — produces a finer, more consistent, softer fibre than the short-staple alternatives grown in other regions. Two shirts can both be labelled 100% linen and be made from fabric that is fundamentally different in quality. The label alone does not distinguish them.

The certification question. Certified Belgian linen carries a protected designation of origin — the certification confirms that the flax was grown and processed in the specific corridor where the climate and soil produce the longest, most consistent fibre. A 100% linen shirt without a certificate of origin could be made from linen grown and processed anywhere. The certificate is the document that confirms the quality claim behind the composition label.

What to look for. A certificate of origin confirming certified Belgian linen provenance. Natural buttons — seashell, walnut, or corozo — rather than plastic, which signals a commitment to natural materials throughout. Handmade construction in a genuine atelier rather than mass production. The fabric weight in the 140–180 GSM range for a versatile warm-weather shirt.
