Linen does shrink — but the degree of shrinkage, and whether it is a problem, depends entirely on two variables: the quality of the linen and how it is washed. Understanding both means the shrinkage question becomes manageable rather than a reason to avoid linen entirely.
The first wash. Certified Belgian linen will shrink slightly on the first wash — typically a few percent in both length and width, varying by construction and wash temperature. This is the natural fibre releasing the tension accumulated during weaving and finishing. It is not a defect; it is the fabric settling into its natural state. After the first wash, a correctly cared for Belgian linen garment will not shrink significantly in subsequent washes at the same temperature.

— Pieter Petros, founderThe temperature variable. The single most controllable factor in linen shrinkage is wash temperature. Washing at 30 degrees: minimal shrinkage beyond the first wash. Washing at 40 degrees: acceptable for most linen garments with minimal additional shrinkage. Washing at 60 degrees or above: significant shrinkage risk, colour degradation, and accelerated fibre weakening. PP linen shirts should be washed at 30–40 degrees maximum.
The tumble dryer. Tumble drying on high heat is the fastest way to cause significant linen shrinkage. The combination of heat and mechanical agitation causes the flax fibre to contract. If you use a tumble dryer, use the lowest heat setting and remove the garment while still slightly damp. Better still, hang dry.
The pre-shrunk question. Some linen garments are pre-washed by the manufacturer to reduce first-wash shrinkage. PP linen shirts are not pre-washed — the progressive softening that makes certified Belgian linen improve over time begins with the first correct wash, and pre-washing would interfere with this process.
Buying size for shrinkage. If you are between sizes in a PP linen shirt, take the larger. The slight first-wash shrinkage and the natural drape of linen means the larger size will settle into a better fit after the first wash.
