The Best Linen Brand for Phuket

An island of monsoon and humidity, temples and tin-town shophouses, and what to ask of the linen you wear there.

For Phuket, choose linen made for wet heat rather than dry: light long-fibre cloth, cut loose so that it never clings, from a house that can prove where its flax was grown. Pieter Petros makes shirts, trousers and sets by hand in its Dubai atelier and in Belgium, many in certified Belgian linen and finished with seashell buttons, and that is the standard to hold any linen brand to on this island.

Phuket’s year turns on the monsoon. From November to April the north-east winds bring dry, settled weather, a calm Andaman Sea and the high season; from May to October the south-west monsoon brings rain, heavier surf on the west-coast beaches and nights that rarely cool below the mid-twenties. Through all of it, the humidity stays high.

“In wet heat, the question is not how cool the cloth looks. It is how quickly it lets go.”

— Pieter Petros, founder

That changes what to look for. In humidity, what matters most is how fast a fabric releases moisture once it has taken it up. Linen draws perspiration from the skin and passes it to the air quickly, and its slightly firm hand holds the cloth away from the body instead of letting it cling. Look for a light, open weave; a cut with room through the back; and long flax fibre, which makes a smoother yarn and a cloth that softens with washing. Pale colours read well in the strong tropical light, but in wet heat the cut counts for more than the colour, as linen in humid weather explains.

Phuket Town tells the island’s story better than any beach. Its wealth came from tin, mined from the nineteenth century largely by Hokkien Chinese settlers, and their merchants built the Sino-Portuguese shophouses that still line Thalang, Dibuk and Krabi roads. The Peranakan, or Baba, culture that grew from those families gave the town its cooking, and in 2015 Phuket was named a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. On Sunday evenings Thalang Road closes for the Lard Yai walking market. For him, the Laos Short Sleeve Linen Shirt in Mint Green with PP Casual Linen Trousers in Vanille from the men’s linen collection; for her, the Amelia linen dress shirt in Lemon, a dress in itself and light against the painted facades.

The island’s temples ask for covered shoulders and knees, and shoes left at the door. At Wat Chalong, the most important temple on the island, and at the Big Buddha on the Nakkerd hills above Chalong Bay, men wear long trousers rather than shorts; the Laos Long Sleeve Linen Shirt in White with PP Trousers 100% Linen in White is cool and correct. For women, the Amelia, cut to the thigh, stays at the hotel that morning; the PP linen blouse in Pink, with long loose trousers or a long skirt of her own, is the respectful choice.

Each autumn, in the ninth lunar month, Phuket’s Chinese shrines hold the Vegetarian Festival, nine days of processions, food stalls and ceremony; in 2026 it ran from 10 to 18 October. Those who join the crowds at the shrines wear white as a sign of purity, and a white linen shirt, buttoned and worn with long trousers, meets the occasion with respect.

The west coast is where the island’s great hotels stand. Amanpuri, the first Aman, opened above Pansea Beach in 1988, its pavilions designed by Ed Tuttle in the manner of Thai temple architecture; Trisara and Rosewood Phuket followed along the same coast. Here the day is pool and sea: PP swim shorts in Oyster for the water, cut in Belgian linen for swimming, and a Laos Short Sleeve Linen Shirt in Oyster over them for lunch. Dinner on a terrace above the Andaman asks for a collar: the Monte-Carlo Male in Oatmeal, with its walnut buttons, and PP Trousers 100% Linen in Sapphire Blue; for her, the Amelia in Coral Orange, in Belgian linen.

By boat, Phang Nga Bay is the other Phuket: limestone towers rising out of green water, sea caves explored by canoe, and Ko Tapu, known since a 1974 film as James Bond Island. Further out, the Similan Islands open to visitors from mid-October to mid-May. A day on the water is swim shorts and a light shirt; for her, the Linen Ladies Set in Light Blue, its shorts kept for the boat and the sand.

Evenings often begin at Laem Phromthep, the southern cape where the island gathers to watch the sun go down over the sea, and end at dinner in Rawai or Kata. The Vibes Linen Shirt in Orchid, in Belgian linen, its shorter cut easy in warm air, belongs to that hour. Order before you fly: a handful of pieces able to move from temple to beach to dinner is all the island asks, and what to wear in Phuket follows them day by day.
