Lombok is Bali's neighbour to the east — accessible by fast boat in approximately two hours from Padangbai on Bali's east coast, or by direct flight from Bali's Ngurah Rai airport. Lombok is the more naturally unspoiled alternative to Bali: the Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, Gili Air) off the northwest coast are three small islands without motorised transport; the Senggigi beach resort area on the west coast; the Kuta Lombok surf beach on the south coast (distinct from Kuta Bali); and the sacred volcano of Mount Rinjani dominating the northern sky.

For the Gili Islands. The three Gili Islands — the most celebrated island-hopping destination in Indonesia after Bali. Gili Trawangan is the most developed and most social; Gili Meno the most quiet and most romantic; Gili Air the most balanced. No motorised transport on any of the islands — bicycles and horse carts only. The Islamic context. Lombok is majority Muslim — more conservative in its public expectations than Bali.
