How to Care for Natural Swim Shorts — The Complete Guide
How to care for natural swim shorts — after salt water, after chlorine, washing, drying, and storage for multi-season life.
Natural plant-fibre swim shorts require specific care to maintain their structure, colourway, and performance across multiple seasons of regular resort use. The care is straightforward and takes less than five minutes — the investment in correct aftercare extends the life of the shorts significantly.
After each use in salt water. Rinse thoroughly in fresh cool water as soon as possible after leaving the sea. Salt water left in natural fabric fibres over time can weaken the fibre structure and cause colour degradation. A thorough fresh water rinse immediately after salt water use removes the salt before it dries into the fabric. Do not wring or twist — squeeze gently to remove excess water and hang to dry.
“Rinse in fresh water after every salt water or pool session. This single step — taking less than a minute — extends the life of natural swim shorts significantly and is the most important care action available.”
— Pieter Petros, founderAfter each use in a chlorinated pool. Rinse in fresh cool water thoroughly. Chlorine's effect on natural fibres is cumulative — regular pool use without rinsing will gradually weaken the fabric and affect the colourway over time. A fresh water rinse after every pool session is the single most important step in extending the life of natural swim shorts used in chlorinated water.
Washing. Hand wash or machine wash on a gentle cold cycle with a small amount of liquid detergent. Do not use fabric softener — it coats the natural fibre and affects the fabric's moisture management properties. Wash in cold water only — warm or hot water causes shrinkage and colour degradation in natural fabric swim shorts.
Drying. Hang dry in shade or indirect light. Do not tumble dry — the heat and mechanical action cause shrinkage. Avoid drying in direct strong sunlight for extended periods, which can cause colour fading particularly in the darker colourways. Lay flat or hang from the waistband — hanging from a leg can cause the fabric to stretch slightly on one side.
Storage. Store clean and completely dry. Damp storage causes mildew in natural fabric. Between seasons, store folded loosely in a breathable bag or drawer — not in a sealed plastic bag, which traps moisture.
