Yes — linen can shrink, and the conditions under which it shrinks are specific and entirely avoidable with the correct wash method. Understanding what causes linen shrinkage and what prevents it removes the anxiety from the first wash.

What causes shrinkage in linen. Heat is the primary cause of linen shrinkage — specifically, heat applied to the wet fabric either during tumble drying or during washing above the recommended temperature. The flax fibres in linen contract when exposed to heat while damp; if they contract and then set in the dried state at a shorter length, the garment is smaller than it was before washing. This is the mechanism; understanding it points directly to the prevention.

The temperatures that cause shrinkage. Washing above 40 degrees causes meaningful shrinkage in unconditioned linen. Tumble drying on any heat setting above low can cause shrinkage. These are the two controllable variables.

How to prevent shrinkage. Wash at 30 degrees maximum — the PP recommended washing temperature. Do not tumble dry on high heat. If tumble drying: use the lowest heat setting and remove while still slightly damp. Hang dry as the preferred method. A PP linen shirt washed at 30 degrees and hung to dry will not shrink.

What about new linen specifically. A new PP linen shirt may experience minor shrinkage of approximately 2–3% after the first wash at 30 degrees — this is normal for natural fibres and is accounted for in the PP sizing. After the first wash, any residual shrinkage potential is minimal provided the shirt is not exposed to high heat during subsequent washing.
