How to Build a Natural Wardrobe — Where to Begin

On how a natural wardrobe is built — one decision at a time, without a plan and without urgency.

Pieter Petros June 2026 4 min read How to Build Natural Wardrobe

Building a natural wardrobe is not a project. It is a series of individual decisions that accumulate over time into a wardrobe that happens to be entirely natural — without the moment when the full picture was planned or the day when the transition was complete.

Most people who wear natural fabric exclusively arrived there by replacing, not by discarding. One shirt that performed differently from everything else in the wardrobe. Then another. Then the understanding that the difference was consistent and predictable and worth making the criterion for the next choice.

“One shirt that performed differently from everything else in the wardrobe. Then another. That is how a natural wardrobe is built.”

— Pieter Petros, founder

The entry point is the shirt. A single well-made linen shirt — Belgian linen, certified by origin, handmade in a way that holds — is the piece that establishes the standard. Not because it is the most important piece in the wardrobe, but because it is the most worn. A shirt worn twice a week across a season accumulates more hours of contact with the skin than almost any other garment. If the material is right, this is where the difference is felt most clearly and most consistently.

From the shirt, the wardrobe builds outward in the order the occasions demand. Linen shorts for the warm months — same cloth, same standard. Linen trousers for occasions that ask for more. A swim short that stays correct out of the water. The Amelia for women who want the full range of a natural wardrobe in a single piece that covers every hour.

The natural wardrobe does not require a full replacement of everything at once. It requires one good decision followed by another, each one slightly more informed than the last. The shirt softens over the first season and becomes better than the one that arrived. The next piece starts at a standard already established by the first.

Begin with one piece. The wardrobe builds itself from there.
