How Long Does Linen Last? — The Case for Natural Fabric Longevity

How long Belgian linen lasts and what determines its lifespan — care, storage, and the case for natural fabric longevity.

Pieter Petros June 2026 5 min read Linen Care

Belgian linen, cared for correctly, lasts decades. This is not a marketing claim — it is a consequence of the fibre's structure and the way it responds to wear and washing over time.

The flax fibre that produces linen is among the strongest natural fibres used in textile production. A linen garment washed and dried correctly does not degrade in the way that cotton or synthetic fabrics do. The tensile strength of the flax fibre means that repeated washing softens the fabric and helps it settle into its long-term character without significantly reducing performance — the fibres become more settled, the cloth more stable, the garment more itself with each wash rather than less.

“The ten-year linen shirt is not unusual. The twenty-year linen shirt, properly maintained, is entirely possible.”

The comparison with cotton is instructive. A well-made cotton shirt in regular rotation begins to show wear after two to three years — thinning at the collar and cuffs, loss of structure in the body, fading of colour. The same rotation applied to a Belgian linen shirt produces a different result. The collar holds its structure. The colour changes slightly — developing a patina rather than simply fading — and the fabric softens into something that feels increasingly personal.

What limits the lifespan of a linen garment is almost always care rather than the fabric itself. The specific causes of premature wear in linen:

High-temperature washing. Temperatures above 60 degrees Celsius weaken the fibre over time. Wash at 30 to 40 degrees.

Tumble drying on high heat. Repeated high-heat drying degrades the fibre structure faster than any other single factor. Hang dry or tumble dry on low heat.

Incorrect storage. Linen stored damp or compressed in sealed bags can develop mildew or lose its structure. Store hanging or folded loosely in a breathable space.

Correct care produces a garment that improves for years before it reaches a plateau — and holds that plateau for years more. The ten-year linen shirt is not unusual. The twenty-year linen shirt, properly maintained, is entirely possible.
