Does Linen Shrink? — What Actually Happens and How to Prevent It
Yes, linen can shrink — but whether it does depends almost entirely on the quality of the linen and how it is washed.
Yes, linen can shrink — but whether it does, and by how much, depends almost entirely on two things: the quality of the linen and how it is washed.
Lower-grade linen — short-staple, poorly processed — is more susceptible to shrinkage because the fibre structure is less stable. High heat and agitation in the wash cause the individual fibres to contract and tighten, reducing the dimensions of the cloth. This is why cheap linen shirts often shrink significantly after the first wash.
“Quality linen washed correctly does not shrink in any meaningful way. The quality of the linen determines almost everything.”
— Pieter Petros, founderLong-staple Belgian linen behaves differently. The fibre length and the consistency of the weave produce a cloth with greater dimensional stability. Washed correctly — cool to warm temperature, gentle cycle, no excessive heat in drying — Belgian linen experiences minimal shrinkage. Most PP customers find their garments retain their dimensions accurately across years of regular washing.
The specific causes of linen shrinkage and how to avoid them:
Hot water. Water above 60 degrees Celsius causes linen fibres to contract. Wash at 30 to 40 degrees and shrinkage is not a practical concern for quality linen.
High heat drying. A hot tumble dryer cycle is the most common cause of significant linen shrinkage. Hang dry or tumble dry on low heat. Remove from the dryer while slightly damp if tumble drying.
First wash. Most natural fabrics experience a small amount of dimensional change in the first wash as the fabric relaxes from its finishing state. For Belgian linen this change is minimal and the fabric stabilises from the second wash onward. PP garments account for this in the pattern — the fit after the first wash is the intended fit.
Pre-washing. If you are concerned about shrinkage before wearing, wash the garment once before the first wear. After that first wash, the dimensions are stable.
The short answer: quality linen washed correctly does not shrink in any meaningful way. The longer answer is that the quality of the linen determines almost everything.
