Does Linen Pill? — What to Expect and What Prevents It
Quality linen does not pill significantly. What causes pilling, what prevents it, and what to expect from long-staple Belgian linen.
Quality linen does not pill significantly. Pilling — the formation of small fibre balls on the surface of a fabric — is primarily a characteristic of short-staple fibres and synthetic fabrics. Long-staple Belgian linen has a surface that resists pilling over years of wear, maintaining a cleaner appearance than lower-grade alternatives.
The reason lies in the fibre length. Pilling occurs when short fibres on the surface of a fabric tangle with each other through friction, forming the small balls visible on worn fabric. Long-staple flax fibres are anchored more securely in the yarn and resist this tangling. The surface of a well-woven long-staple linen shirt looks as clean after a year of regular washing as it did when new.
“The surface of a well-woven long-staple linen shirt looks as clean after a year of regular washing as it did when new.”
— Pieter Petros, founderLower-grade linen — short-staple, inconsistently processed — pills more readily. This is one of the most reliable ways to distinguish quality linen from inferior linen. Run your fingers across the surface after five or six washes. If the fabric is clean and smooth, the fibre is long-staple. If the surface has developed small irregularities, the fibre quality is lower.
Factors that can cause even quality linen to pill prematurely:
Washing with abrasive fabrics. Washing linen alongside heavy denim, velcro, or rough synthetic fabrics creates surface friction that can pull and tangle even long-staple fibres. Wash linen separately or with other fine natural fabrics.
High-temperature tumble drying. Repeated high-heat drying creates more mechanical friction than hang drying and can accelerate surface wear over time. Low heat or hang drying preserves the surface longer.
Ironing over rough surfaces. Pressing linen against a rough ironing board cover creates surface abrasion. Use a smooth cover.
Belgian linen cared for correctly is highly resistant to pilling. It softens. The surface improves with washing rather than degrading — which is the quality that distinguishes it from almost every other fabric available.
