What Belgian linen actually means. Belgian linen designates linen fabric produced from flax grown in the specific growing corridor of Belgium and northern France — primarily the Lys River valley, whose combination of maritime climate, mineral-rich soil, and pure water produces a longer, more consistent flax fibre than any other region. The retting process — the separation of the flax fibre from the stem — was historically carried out in the Lys River using its specific mineral-rich water.
