The Best Linen Brand for Laucala — A Private-Island Wardrobe
A wardrobe for an island where every setting is a buggy ride from the villa.
Laucala lies off the eastern side of Taveuni, around fifty minutes by private plane from Nadi, and it is an island in the complete sense: roughly 3,500 acres of hills, lagoon and coconut plantation, with only twenty-five villas on it. The resort closed in early 2026 for an extensive renovation, and its owner has said the reopening date will be announced in due course. When guests return, the island itself will be as it was: a place where every setting of the day is reached on foot, by buggy or by boat, and where nobody needs more than a few garments to meet all of them.
Pieter Petros makes those garments by hand in the Dubai atelier and in Belgium; the tennis pieces and swim shorts below are certified Belgian linen. On an island run partly on its own farm, with vegetables, fruit and livestock raised for the kitchen, natural cloth sits with the place rather than on top of it.
“On a private island, the luggage gets lighter every day. By the third morning, you know exactly which shirt you will reach for.”
— Pieter Petros, founderThe course. Laucala's eighteen holes were laid out by the Scottish architect David McLay Kidd across the island's volcanic slopes, with the sea in view from much of the routing. Morning rounds start early, before the heat builds. A PP Tennis Shirt in White or Oatmeal, from the natural tennis collection, plays as well on a fairway as on a court, and the PP Tennis Shorts in Sapphire Blue, with their walnut buttons, finish it.
The reef. The waters around Laucala are part of the reef system that draws divers to the Taveuni area, and the island's dive centre and boats go out daily. On the boat and in the water, a man wears the PP natural swim shorts. A shirt waits dry in the boat bag for the return.
Lunch. The island has several places to eat, from the beach to the plantation house. A Cuba Linen Shirt in Blue or Lemon Yellow, worn open at the neck with PP linen shorts in White, is the lunch uniform for men. For women, the PP linen blouse in Lemon with her own linen shorts, or the Linen Ladies Set in Mint Green, keeps lunch light.
The afternoon. Horses, the spa, a walk up to the island's high point, or simply the villa pool. The PP Casual Linen Trousers in Vanille are the garment for anything involving a saddle or a hill path; the drawstring waist suits the heat.
Dinner. Evenings on Laucala are unhurried and rarely formal. The Monte-Carlo Male in Oyster, finished with walnut buttons, worn with the PP Trousers 100% Linen in White, is as dressed as the island asks a man to be. The Amelia linen dress shirt in Oyster, the colourway that also carries walnut buttons, is the women's equivalent, with bare feet on the terrace if the evening allows.
Pieter Petros is held at four addresses in Dubai, at One&Only Aesthesis and One&Only Kéa Island in Greece, at Tiziano Brunetto on the Italian Riviera and at Four Seasons Resort and Residences, Río Grande, Puerto Rico.
Taveuni, Fiji's Garden Island, lies across the channel, and the wider country is set out in what to wear in Fiji.
