The linen worth bringing to Grenada is the kind that can say where its fibre grew, just as a Grenadian estate can about its cocoa: long-fibre flax, woven light for tropical heat, cut loose and finished with natural buttons. Pieter Petros uses certified Belgian linen across much of its collection, whose certificate follows the flax from the field to the cloth, and makes every garment by hand in Dubai and Belgium.

Grenada wears its harvest on its flag: a nutmeg sits at the hoist of the banner adopted at independence on 7 February 1974. The Spice Isle grows nutmeg, mace, cinnamon and cocoa in a steep, green interior, and it remains an island of farms and fishing villages as much as hotels. Bringing linen here is bringing one natural fibre to a place that lives by others.

Provenance is the first thing to ask about. Linen begins as flax, and the finest flax for clothing grows in the cool, damp coastal belt that runs from northern France through Flanders, where the fibre grows long and fine; how linen is made, from the field follows it step by step. After provenance, look at the weave, which should be even and light enough for the tropics; at the cut, which should stand away from the body in humid air; and at the finishing, from the stitching to the buttons, which on PP shirts are cut from seashell and on the Monte-Carlo shirts and the linen trousers from walnut.

Grenada lies far to the south of the Caribbean chain, not far from Trinidad and the coast of South America. Its dry season runs roughly from January to May, with steady trade winds and the most settled weather; the rainy season follows from June to December, warm and humid, with short, heavy showers. The island sits near the southern edge of the hurricane belt, but it has not been spared: Ivan in 2004 and Beryl in 2024, which devastated the sister island of Carriacou, both left deep marks. December to April is the high season.

St George’s is a harbour town of steep streets built around the Carenage, a horseshoe-shaped inner harbour ringed with red-roofed warehouses and painted houses, with Fort George, built by the French in the early eighteenth century, on the headland above. On Saturday mornings the market square fills with spice sellers and farmers.
