Colour fade in linen shirts is a predictable and preventable outcome of incorrect care rather than an inevitable property of the fabric. Understanding which conditions cause colour fade and avoiding them maintains the depth and vibrancy of PP linen shirt colourways across many seasons of wearing and washing.
The primary cause — hot washing. Hot washing above 40 degrees is the single most significant cause of colour fade in linen shirts — the hot water strips dye molecules from the flax fibre at an accelerated rate. For deeper colourways — navy, dark blue, Dubarry — this is most visibly damaging because the colour differential between a faded and an unfaded area is most pronounced in dark tones. Washing at 30 degrees maximum is the primary prevention measure for all PP linen shirt colourways.

Drying a PP linen shirt in direct sunlight causes UV fading — the ultraviolet component of sunlight breaks down dye molecules at the surface of the fabric. For all colourways, drying in shade or indirect light maintains colour depth significantly better than direct sun drying. This is particularly important for dark colourways and for vivid tones such as Coral Orange, Dubarry, and Lemon Yellow where UV fading is most visibly damaging.
The third cause — chlorine and aggressive detergents. Chlorine bleach is a chemical that actively strips colour from linen fabric and should never be used on any PP linen garment. Powder detergents with high enzyme content can also strip dye from linen over repeated washes; a gentle liquid detergent specifically formulated for natural fabrics is the correct choice.
Prevention in practice. Wash at 30 degrees, use a gentle liquid detergent, turn the shirt inside-out before washing (this reduces the mechanical abrasion on the outer dyed surface during the wash cycle), and dry in shade.
