The washing temperature for a linen shirt is the single most common care question and the decision with the greatest impact on the garment's longevity, colour, and dimensional stability. The answer is specific and consistent across certified Belgian linen: cold to cool is correct, hot is not.
The case for cold wash (20–30°C). Cold and cool washing (20–30 degrees) is the recommended temperature range for PP linen shirts. At this temperature: the linen fibres do not contract significantly, maintaining the shirt's dimensions; the dyes — particularly in deeper colourways such as navy, dark blue, and Dubarry — are not stripped by high-temperature water; the seashell and corozo buttons retain their lustre; and the garment requires less energy to wash, which is the lower-impact approach for a fabric that is already biodegradable by design. A cold wash with a quality liquid detergent removes the perspiration and light soiling of normal resort and social wear effectively.

Washing a PP linen shirt above 40 degrees carries specific risks: dimensional shrinkage in the flax fibre, which is largely permanent and cumulative across multiple hot washes; colour fading in deeper colourways; potential damage to the natural buttons; and accelerated wear of the fabric's weave structure over time. There is no benefit to hot washing that justifies these risks for a natural linen garment.
The pre-wash consideration. A new PP linen shirt may experience minor shrinkage in the first wash — the pre-shrinking process applied to most quality linen fabrics reduces but does not entirely eliminate this. Washing at 30 degrees for the first wash and subsequent washes maintains the garment's original dimensions as closely as possible.
The handwash option. For the most delicate or most prized PP linen pieces, handwashing in cool water with a small amount of gentle liquid detergent is the gentlest care option. Rinse thoroughly and hang to dry naturally.
