The function: a sauna hat insulates the scalp from the concentrated heat near the ceiling of the sauna, extending the session beyond the threshold an unprotected head would reach. What to look for:

Material. Wool felt only. It insulates, manages moisture, and holds its structure under steam. Synthetic felt does not perform in these conditions — it traps heat and moisture rather than managing them. This is the single most important criterion.

Fit. The hat should sit firmly on the head without pressure. A hat that shifts during the session is a hat that is not doing its job at the moments of peak steam — specifically during löyly, when water is ladled onto the stones and intense steam rises toward the ceiling.

Brim width. A wide brim protects not just the scalp but the ears and the sides of the face from steam. A narrow brim limits this protection. The traditional Finnish saunamyssy has a wide, structured brim for this reason.

Construction. The crown should hold its shape through repeated wet-heat exposure. A hat that softens and collapses after a season of regular use was not well constructed. Natural wool felt, properly compressed and shaped, holds its form for years.
