Does Linen Fade? — What to Expect from Natural Fabric Over Time

Whether linen fades, what causes it, and how well-dyed Belgian linen behaves over years of correct care.

Well-dyed linen retains colour well over time when cared for correctly, though all fabrics will gradually change with repeated washing and sun exposure. The rate of colour change over time depends on three things: the quality of the dye, the frequency of washing, and exposure to direct sunlight. Each is manageable.

Dye quality is the most important factor. Well-dyed linen — where the dye has penetrated the fibre correctly and been fixed at the right temperature — holds colour reliably over years of wear and washing. Poorly dyed linen, where the dye sits on the surface of the fibre rather than within it, will fade noticeably within a season. The quality of dyeing is not visible at the point of purchase but becomes apparent within the first several washes.

“A PP linen shirt worn and washed correctly over three years develops rather than degrades. That is the quality that distinguishes natural fabric made correctly.”

— Pieter Petros, founder

Washing temperature affects fading more than washing frequency. Washing linen in hot water — above 60 degrees Celsius — accelerates colour loss in any fabric. The correct wash temperature for linen is cold or warm: 30-40 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, well-dyed linen will retain its colour through years of regular washing.

Direct sunlight is one of the primary causes of fading in textiles, including linen. Leaving a linen garment in direct sun for extended periods — draped over outdoor furniture, for example — will cause more colour change than a year of correct washing. Store linen out of direct light and dry it in shade or indoors.

The natural fading that occurs in quality linen over years of use is not the same as degradation. A PP linen shirt in navy worn and washed correctly over three years will have a slightly softer colourway than when new — a development rather than a deterioration. The fabric itself will be in better condition than when it arrived, having softened with each wash. This natural evolution is part of the character of a well-made linen garment, not a defect.
