Linen fabric weight guide — light, medium, heavy categories, PP's medium weight, softening at weight.
Linen fabric weight is measured in grams per square metre (GSM) — the weight of one square metre of the woven fabric. Understanding the weight range, what it means for wearing comfort, and where PP's certified Belgian linen sits within the range allows an informed purchase decision.
The weight categories. Lightweight linen: approximately 100–150 GSM. This is the most breathable category and the most appropriate for direct beach and outdoor use above 35 degrees. The fabric is sheer at the lower end and becomes opaque toward 150 GSM. Medium-weight linen: approximately 150–200 GSM. The most versatile weight — breathable enough for warm outdoor occasions, structured enough for the resort restaurant and the business casual meeting. Heavyweight linen: approximately 200 GSM and above. More structured, more insulating, appropriate for cooler temperatures and the most formal contexts.

This is the design decision that makes the shirt appropriate for the full PP occasion range: breathable enough for the beach terrace, structured enough for the resort dinner. Not transparent in direct sun; not stiff in the hand.
The Monte-Carlo Male specifically. The PP Monte-Carlo Male is cut from a heavier weight Belgian linen than the standard Laos — a construction choice consistent with its more formally composed positioning in the collection. The additional weight produces a more structured drape and a more formally composed appearance, consistent with the Monte-Carlo Male's more formal positioning in the collection.
Weight and softening. A heavier linen at the same GSM as a lighter linen from shorter-staple fibre will feel stiffer at purchase. The certified Belgian linen's long-staple construction means it softens more dramatically with washing than short-staple alternatives at the same weight.
