Linen Shirt Hem Length — The Guide to PP's Proportions

Linen shirt hem length guide — the resort hem, average and shorter and taller frame configurations.

The hem length of a PP linen shirt is one of its most distinctive features and one of the most common sources of initial confusion for buyers accustomed to conventional fitted shirts. Understanding what the PP hem length is designed to do — and how to configure it for different heights and occasions — removes the uncertainty.

What the PP hem length is designed for. The PP Laos linen shirt is cut with a hem long enough to cover the waistband when worn untucked — long enough that the shirt falls past the hip to a point where the body is covered without the shirt reading as a dress shirt that happens to be untucked. This longer hem is the resort length: the hem that covers the waistband of swim shorts, linen shorts, or linen trousers, and that hangs at the correct point when the shirt is worn open as a beach cover.

“The PP hem is the resort length — long enough to cover the waistband when untucked, hanging at the correct point when the shirt is worn open as a beach cover. Understanding this hem is understanding the PP silhouette.”

— Pieter Petros, founder

For average frames. A buyer of average height (170–180cm) will find the PP hem falls approximately 10–12cm below the natural waist — at the top of the thigh. This is the intended proportioning: the shirt covers the waistband of the lower garment when untucked, hangs away from the body in the natural linen drape, and does not read as too long.

For shorter frames. The same hem on a buyer of 165cm falls lower on the thigh than intended — at mid-thigh rather than top of thigh. The solution: tuck the shirt in for the most proportioned result, or choose the short-sleeve PP shirt which has slightly less body length in some sizes.

For taller frames. Buyers above 185cm may find the PP hem barely reaches the waistband when untucked — the longer proportions of a tall frame consume the hem length that creates the correct coverage on an average frame. Tucking in remains well-proportioned; for the untucked look, taller buyers should review the specific hem measurements in the PP size guide.
