How to Store Linen — Keeping Natural Fabric in Perfect Condition
How to store linen correctly — folding, hanging, light, plastic, and what to do before extended storage.
Linen stores well. Of all the natural fabrics, it is among the least demanding in terms of storage requirements. The basic principles are straightforward and, once applied, require no ongoing attention.
Fold or hang — both work. Linen can be stored folded in a drawer or hanging in a wardrobe without any meaningful difference in outcome. If hanging, use a wide, padded hanger that supports the shoulders of the shirt correctly. Thin wire hangers can leave marks on the shoulders of heavier linen pieces over extended storage.
“Linen stores well. Of all the natural fabrics, it is among the least demanding in terms of storage requirements.”
— Pieter Petros, founderAvoid plastic. Linen is a natural fibre that needs to breathe. Storing linen in sealed plastic garment bags traps moisture and can cause the fabric to yellow over time, particularly in humid climates. Use cotton or linen garment bags if hanging pieces for extended periods — or simply leave them hanging in an open wardrobe.
Keep out of direct light. Prolonged exposure to sunlight causes colour fading in any textile. A wardrobe or drawer away from direct sunlight is all that is required. This is especially relevant in the Gulf and Mediterranean, where sunlight intensity is high.
Ensure the garment is clean before storage. Storing linen that has been worn but not washed — particularly for extended periods, across seasons — can allow perspiration residue and body oils to set into the fabric, making them harder to remove later and potentially causing discolouration. Wash before storing for any period longer than a week or two.
No cedar or mothballs needed. Unlike wool, linen is not susceptible to moth damage. Cedar and mothballs are unnecessary and can leave residual odours in the fabric.
For PP linen specifically: the certificate of origin that accompanies each garment can be stored with the shirt — a simple reminder of what the fabric is and where it came from.
