Does Linen Fade? — How Linen Keeps Its Colour Wash After Wash
Whether linen fades, what causes it, and how well-dyed Belgian linen behaves over years of correct care.
Well-dyed linen does not fade or discolour quickly: washed on a gentle cycle at 30°C, it keeps its colour through many washes, softening only slightly over years — and the same holds for a linen-silk blouse, provided it is washed cool and gently. Linen that loses colour fast after a few washes has almost always been poorly dyed or washed too hot.
Well-dyed linen retains colour well over time when cared for correctly, though all fabrics will gradually change with repeated washing and wear. The rate of colour change over time depends on three things: the quality of the dye, the temperature of the wash, and how the garment is treated in the machine. Each is manageable.
Dye quality is the most important factor. Well-dyed linen — where the dye has penetrated the fibre correctly and been fixed at the right temperature — holds colour reliably over years of wear and washing. Poorly dyed linen, where the dye sits on the surface of the fibre rather than within it, will fade noticeably within a season. The quality of dyeing is not visible at the point of purchase but becomes apparent within the first several washes.
“A PP linen shirt worn and washed correctly over three years develops rather than degrades. That is the quality that distinguishes natural fabric made correctly.”
— Pieter Petros, founderDoes linen fade in the wash?
Washing temperature affects fading more than washing frequency. Washing linen in hot water — above 60 degrees Celsius — accelerates colour loss in any fabric. The correct wash temperature for linen is a gentle cycle at 30 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, well-dyed linen will retain its colour through years of regular washing.
Friction matters as much as heat. Colour loss often shows first where the fabric rubs — along the collar fold, the cuffs and the seams — rather than evenly across the garment. Turning a linen shirt inside out before washing, giving it room in the drum rather than packing the machine full, and choosing a mild detergent without bleach all reduce that wear. Washing similar colours together keeps a white shirt white and a navy shirt clean in tone.
Linen-silk blouses and blends
A blouse woven from linen and silk behaves like linen in the wash, with one difference: silk is the more delicate of the two fibres. Wash a linen-silk blouse cool, on the gentlest cycle or by hand, with a mild detergent made for delicates, and never wring it. Treated this way, the colour of a well-dyed linen-silk blend holds through many washes; harsh detergents and hot water are what dull it.
Does black or navy linen fade?
Dark colourways — black, navy, dark blue — show any colour change sooner than light ones, simply because the contrast is greater: a slight softening is invisible on oatmeal and visible on black. The same rules apply with more care: wash inside out, cool, with like colours, and keep bleach and stain-removing powders away from the fabric. A dark linen garment that has softened a little in tone after several seasons has not deteriorated; it has taken on the lived-in depth that well-made linen develops.
Does linen dye well?
Linen is a plant fibre, cellulose like cotton, and it takes the dyes made for cellulose fibres well when they are applied and fixed correctly. How well the colour holds depends on how thoroughly the dye is fixed, which is why dye quality varies so much between linens. Our guide to how linen is dyed explains the process in detail.
Drying and storage
Drying is not where colour is decided. Linen can be dried on the line, indoors or in the tumble dryer on a low setting, and in Pieter Petros's experience there is no real difference between them. Store linen clean and dry, hung or loosely folded with space around it, so that the fibre is never stored with marks that later need harsh treatment to remove.
How long do linen shirts last?
The natural fading that occurs in quality linen over years of use is not the same as degradation. A PP linen shirt in navy worn and washed correctly over three years will have a slightly softer colourway than when new — a development rather than a deterioration. The fabric itself will be in better condition than when it arrived, having softened with each wash. This natural evolution is part of the character of a well-made linen garment, not a defect. A well-made linen shirt lasts for many years of regular wear; our guide to how long a linen shirt lasts covers what determines its life.
