What to Wear in Singapore — The PP Wardrobe

On Marina Bay, the Civic District, Dempsey Hill, and the rooftop bars — the Belgian linen wardrobe for Southeast Asia's most considered city.

Singapore is one of the most considered cities in the world for luxury travel, and it operates at a register that is higher than most Southeast Asian destinations. The Marina Bay skyline, the restaurants of the CBD, the colonial architecture of the civic district, the private members clubs and hotel bars along Orchard Road — these are contexts that reward considered dress. Singapore is also one of the most humid cities in the world, with year-round temperatures above 30 degrees and humidity that makes fabric choice more consequential than in drier climates.

The heat and humidity of Singapore are the defining practical conditions. Unlike the dry heat of the Gulf or the moderate warmth of the Mediterranean, Singapore's combination of sustained high temperature and very high humidity creates conditions in which many synthetic fabrics can feel less comfortable during prolonged outdoor exposure. Belgian linen's moisture management properties — absorbing perspiration and releasing it as vapour — make it one of the most practical fabric choices for a full Singapore day.

“Singapore’s combination of heat and humidity makes fabric choice more consequential than in drier climates. Belgian linen is one of the most practical choices for a full Singapore day.”

For the CBD and Marina Bay: the business environment, the hotels along Marina Bay, the restaurants and bars of the financial district — this is a context that demands the most formal end of the resort wardrobe. A PP linen shirt in white or oyster, tucked with linen trousers and leather shoes, carries correctly through a business meeting or client dinner in this environment. The air-conditioned interiors of Singapore's premium venues are cold enough that a linen shirt, even untucked, provides appropriate coverage.

For the Civic District and Orchard Road: the cultural institutions, the luxury retail, the afternoon exploring the colonial architecture of the civic precinct — this is Singapore at its most visually composed. Linen in a natural colourway reads correctly here throughout the day.

For the evening — Dempsey Hill, Robertson Quay, the rooftop bars: Singapore's evening restaurant and bar scene is internationally regarded. A PP linen shirt in navy with linen trousers and leather loafers is the combination that carries correctly from dinner at Burnt Ends to drinks at a rooftop bar overlooking Marina Bay.
