What to Wear in Madeira — The Complete PP Wardrobe

Madeira — levada walks, Funchal, Reid's Palace, east coast beaches — the PP linen wardrobe for the Atlantic island.

Pieter Petros July 2026 5 min read Destination

Madeira is the Portuguese Atlantic island known as the island of eternal spring — the subtropical climate that keeps temperatures between 17 and 27 degrees throughout the year, the dramatic volcanic landscape of levada walks through laurisilva forest, the flower festival in April, the New Year's fireworks that have been recognised as the world's largest, and the growing luxury hotel scene of the Reid's Palace and the more recently developed Savoy properties. The wardrobe responds to Madeira's specific combination of year-round warmth and the active outdoor context that the island's landscape produces.

For the levada walks. Madeira's network of irrigation channels (levadas) has been adapted into a hiking trail system that passes through the UNESCO-listed laurisilva forest — the ancient subtropical forest that covers the island's higher elevations. A PP linen shirt in a warm natural or earth tone with linen trousers and leather walking shoes or trainers for the levada context. The levada walks require practical clothing rather than resort wear; the PP linen shirt in earth tones is appropriately natural for the forest environment.

“Madeira is the island of eternal spring — temperatures between 17 and 27 degrees throughout the year. The levada walks through laurisilva forest, Reid's Palace above the sea, the black sand beaches — natural linen carries every Madeiran context.”

— Pieter Petros, founder

For Funchal and the capital. The Mercado dos Lavradores (the flower and fruit market), the old town of Funchal, the cable car to Monte and the return by wicker toboggan — a PP linen shirt in white or a warm natural with linen trousers and leather shoes. The terraced gardens of the Monte Palace Tropical Garden reward natural fabric in warm naturals.

For Reid's Palace. The most famous hotel in Madeira and one of the most celebrated in the Atlantic — the afternoon tea terrace, the pool, the gardens above the sea. White PP linen for the pool and beach below; a composed PP combination for the Reid's afternoon tea and the evening dinner.

For the east coast beaches. The pebble beaches of the east coast and the lido pools of Funchal — natural swim shorts and a white PP linen shirt, leather sandals.
