Packing a linen shirt correctly reduces the crease development during transit and makes the shirt wearable on arrival without ironing. The method is specific and worth knowing.

The rolling method. Roll the PP linen shirt rather than folding it. Lay the shirt face down. Fold the sleeves across the back of the shirt (long sleeve: fold at the elbow to bring the cuffs to the centre back; short sleeve: fold in at the shoulder). Roll the shirt from the collar down to the hem in a firm, even roll. The rolling method produces fewer and shallower creases than flat folding, because the fabric is under even tension throughout rather than being creased at hard fold lines.

The tissue paper layer. Before rolling, place the shirt inside out or inside a layer of acid-free tissue paper. The tissue paper prevents the hard fold crease by cushioning the fabric at the roll. Even a single layer of tissue paper between the shirt and direct contact with the suitcase lining reduces crease depth.

Positioning in the suitcase. Pack rolled linen shirts horizontally across the width of the suitcase rather than vertically. Place them in the middle layer of the packing — clothing above and below — rather than against the hard base or lid of the suitcase. The middle layer is the least compressed during transit.

Arrival recovery. A PP linen shirt packed correctly will arrive with shallow, even creases rather than deep fold creases. Hang the shirt in the bathroom while showering — the steam from the shower relaxes the linen fibres and most transit crease resolves in 10–15 minutes without ironing. For the most important occasion: iron while slightly damp.

The natural crease context. In the resort and beach context — the majority of occasions where PP linen is worn — the natural crease of linen after travel reads as appropriate rather than as a failure of the garment. Pack correctly; recover with steam when needed; wear naturally when the context allows.
