How to Wash a Linen Shirt for the First Time — The Crucial First Wash
First wash of a PP linen shirt — the crucial conditions, temperature, machine settings, detergent, what happens after.
The first wash of a PP linen shirt is the most important one — it sets the softening trajectory and, if done incorrectly, is the most likely single wash to cause avoidable shrinkage or distortion. Understanding what to do before the first wash, during it, and after it protects the shirt and starts the improving trajectory correctly.
Before the first wash: do not dry-clean. PP linen shirts are machine washable and do not require dry cleaning. Do not dry-clean before the first wash — dry cleaning chemicals are not appropriate for certified Belgian linen and the dry-cleaning process does not initiate the softening trajectory that washing does.

Not 40, not cold, not a hot wash to "sanitise" the new shirt. 30 degrees is the correct temperature for the first wash and for every subsequent wash. The 30-degree wash removes any manufacturing finishes or sizing agents applied during production (these are normal and harmless) without exposing the fabric to heat that can cause shrinkage.
The machine settings. Gentle or delicate cycle. No spinning above 800rpm — high-speed spinning can distort the fabric structure of linen. If the machine has a wool or delicate cycle: use it for linen shirts.
Detergent. Liquid detergent — a small amount. No fabric softener on the first wash or any subsequent wash. No biological enzyme detergents (these can break down natural protein fibres; while linen is a cellulose rather than protein fibre, enzyme detergents are unnecessarily aggressive for the purpose).
After the first wash. Remove promptly from the machine — linen that sits damp in a machine drum for extended periods can develop odours that are difficult to remove. Shake gently and hang from the collar to dry in shade. Do not wring.
The result. The shirt after the first correct wash will feel slightly softer and more fluid than it did new — this is the beginning of the improving trajectory that certified Belgian linen delivers over its lifetime.
