The buttons on a linen shirt are the most frequently overlooked quality indicator — and the most immediately informative. Understanding the difference between the natural button materials PP uses and the synthetic plastic alternatives used by most of the market produces a clearer picture of the quality difference than any fabric description alone.

Seashell buttons. The majority of PP linen shirts carry PP linen shirts — naturally sourced from sea shells, typically mother-of-pearl or trochus shell, cut and polished to produce the finished button. Seashell buttons are naturally irregular — no two are identical in exactly the same way, because they are cut from a natural material with variable surface characteristics. This natural irregularity is a feature, not a defect. The lustre of a seashell button — the soft iridescence that catches the light slightly differently from different angles — comes from the material's natural structure, not from a surface coating. Seashell buttons are warmer to the touch than plastic alternatives and have a specific weight that plastic cannot replicate.

Walnut buttons. The PP Monte-Carlo Male and the PP linen trousers and shorts carry walnut buttons — made from the wood of the walnut tree, a harder and denser material than most button alternatives. The walnut button has a specific warm brown colour and a smooth, dense surface. It communicates formality and natural material consistency in a way that seashell does not — the walnut button is the more formally composed natural button construction.

Corozo nut buttons. The PP ladies linen set shorts and selected women's pieces carry corozo nut buttons — made from the tagua palm nut (vegetable ivory), naturally sourced and naturally coloured. The corozo button has a specific ivory-like surface quality that gives it a distinctively natural character.

Plastic buttons — what to avoid. Injection-moulded plastic buttons are the mark of volume production regardless of fabric quality. They have a uniform surface, a lighter weight, and a lack of the natural irregularity that characterises all three natural button types used by PP.
