How to Clean and Care for a Sauna Hat — Keeping Wool Felt in Perfect Condition
A complete care guide for wool felt sauna hats — cleaning, drying, storage, and longevity.
A wool felt sauna hat used regularly will last for years with minimal care. The maintenance is straightforward — wool felt is a resilient material — but there are a few specific practices that extend the hat's life considerably and a few that shorten it.
After each session: hang to dry. This is the single most important step. Wool felt that is left compressed or folded while still warm and damp from the session will lose its shape over time and develop an odour that is difficult to remove. A few minutes hanging from the loop handle in cool, dry air after each session is sufficient.
“A wool felt hat that is dried properly after each session rarely requires full washing more than a few times per year.”
— Pieter Petros, founderFor light cleaning between sessions: brush the surface with a soft natural-bristle brush. This removes any residue from the sauna environment and keeps the felt surface smooth. Brush in the direction of the felt pile, not against it.
For deeper cleaning: hand wash in cool water with a small amount of wool-safe detergent. Never use hot water — heat causes wool felt to shrink and stiffen. Never wring or twist the hat — this distorts the shape of the crown and brim permanently. Rinse thoroughly, press gently to remove excess water, and reshape by hand while the felt is still damp. Place over a rounded surface — a bowl the approximate size of the crown works well — and allow to dry naturally at room temperature. Never dry near direct heat or in a tumble dryer.
For odour removal without washing: allow the hat to air fully between sessions. Most sauna hat odour comes from incomplete drying rather than from contamination. A hat that is dried properly after each session rarely requires full washing more than a few times per year.
Storage: store the hat in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Sunlight fades natural dyes over time. A breathable bag or a dedicated hook in the sauna room is ideal.
The PP sauna hat in 100% natural wool felt will hold its shape, its colour, and its function for many years with this level of care.
