The Case for Biodegradable by Design

On what happens to a garment after it is worn — and why the answer matters from the beginning.

What happens to a garment after it is worn is rarely considered — yet it defines everything that came before it.

Most clothing is not designed with its end in mind. The fibres are synthetic. The dyes are chemical. The buttons are plastic. When the garment is discarded, none of it disappears. It accumulates. It fragments into particles too small to see but present everywhere — in soil, in water, in the bodies of living things.

Biodegradable by design begins from a different premise entirely.

At Pieter Petros, every material is chosen because it comes from the earth and will return to it. The foundation is certified Belgian linen — grown from flax in northern Belgium and France, processed without synthetic intervention, and fully biodegradable at the end of its life. The cloth it produces leaves no trace when it is done.

"From nature, back to nature. That is not a slogan. It is a condition."

— Pieter Petros, founder

The buttons follow the same principle — natural materials, chosen for what they are and what they become.

Our men's linen collection and women's linen sets are made entirely from natural materials — without synthetic blends or plastic components.

The durability of the fabric matters here too. A garment that lasts is a garment that does not need to be replaced. Belgian linen softens with each wash and holds its form across years of wear. The end, when it comes, is genuinely distant — and when it arrives, the cloth goes back to where it came from.

Biodegradable by design is not a quality added at the end of the process. It is the process — present in every material chosen, every button selected, every decision made before the garment exists.

Designed to return, from the beginning.
