Bahrain is an archipelago of some thirty natural islands, joined to Saudi Arabia since 1986 by the King Fahd Causeway, and for thousands of years it lived from the sea. It was the heart of Dilmun, a Bronze Age trading civilisation whose burial mounds, scattered across the north of the main island, were inscribed by UNESCO in 2019. Later its oyster beds made it the great pearling centre of the Gulf. A country with that history has a long and precise eye for quality, and the visitor's clothes are read with the same eye.

So how does one linen maker earn trust over another in a market like this? By what can be shown rather than said. The flax should come from the coastal plains of Flanders and northern France, whose long fibres weave into a cloth that hangs straight and stays composed through a warm afternoon. Then the calendar. Bahrain's season runs from November to March. November days are still warm, around the high twenties; from December to February the afternoons settle near 20°C, the air is dry and the evenings can be cool enough for long sleeves by the sea. From May to September the heat passes 40°C with heavy humidity, and life moves indoors. The weekend falls on Friday and Saturday, and Friday midday is given to prayer.
