What to Wear Wine Tasting — The PP Natural Fabric Guide for Men

What to wear wine tasting — vineyard, tasting room, winery lunch, and the regional context from Tuscany to Barossa.

Wine tasting occupies a specific position in the summer social calendar — the vineyard visit, the cellar tasting, the winery lunch. These occasions ask for a wardrobe that is composed and considered without being formal, comfortable enough for walking between vines and sitting at a tasting table, and appropriate for the outdoor agricultural setting of the vineyard as well as the more refined context of the winery dining room.

The vineyard context. Walking between rows of vines — in Tuscany, Burgundy, Napa, the Barossa, Santorini, or the Alentejo — is an outdoor, physical activity in warm conditions. A PP linen shirt in a warm natural or earth tone with linen trousers and leather shoes or boots appropriate for uneven ground. Earth tones belong in the vineyard landscape; white reads as slightly at odds with the dust of the working vineyard in the height of summer.

“Earth tones belong in the vineyard landscape; white reads as slightly at odds with the dust of the working vineyard in summer. The tasting room rewards composition; the winery lunch rewards natural fabric throughout.”

— Pieter Petros, founder

The tasting room. The cellar tasting — cool, dimly lit, the focus on the glass — asks for a composed wardrobe. A PP linen shirt in white or navy, tucked into linen trousers. The smart-casual combination that reads as respectful of the context and engaged with the occasion.

The winery lunch. The lunch table set up among the vines or on the winery terrace — the occasion where the wardrobe carries the full social register of a fine outdoor dining experience. A PP linen shirt tucked into linen trousers, leather shoes. For the more formal winery restaurant, add a PP linen blazer.

The Tuscany, Burgundy, and Barossa contexts. The most famous wine regions each have their own visual context — the cypress-lined roads of Tuscany suit earth tones in linen; the more formal register of Burgundy rewards a composed shirt and trouser combination; the relaxed Australian context is well-served by an open-collar PP linen shirt in a warm natural.
