Skiathos is the most internationally known of the Sporades islands — its role as the filming location for several scenes in Mamma Mia has given it a specific cultural reference beyond the standard Greek island narrative, and its beach at Koukounaries is consistently ranked among the best in Greece. The island is small enough that its harbour town, the beaches, and the interior forest are all accessible within a few minutes' drive, making it an extremely practical resort destination for a short trip as well as a longer stay.
