Montserrat is the Caribbean's most dramatic destination and its most unusual — the southern half of the island was buried under volcanic ash and lava flows from the Soufrière Hills volcano that began erupting in 1995, destroying the capital Plymouth and forcing the evacuation of much of the population. The northern half of the island remains inhabited, with the W.H. Bramble Airport, the Vue Pointe Hotel, and a small but dedicated visitor community drawn by the island's extraordinary geological spectacle and its Irish heritage connection.

The volcanic exclusion zone. The southern two-thirds of the island is inaccessible — the abandoned capital Plymouth is visible from the helicopter tour that most visitors take, the buried church steeple emerging from the ash. This is one of the most extraordinary natural spectacles in the Caribbean.
