What to Wear in Fujairah: Linen for the East Coast, the Hajar and the Old Mosque

The emirate on the other side of the mountains, where the sea is the Gulf of Oman and autumn arrives a little later.

October is when the east coast of the Emirates becomes possible again. The worst of the summer humidity lifts, the sea off Fujairah stays warm, and the road over the Hajar Mountains from Dubai fills on Friday mornings with cars heading for a weekend on the Gulf of Oman. What to wear in Fujairah through the cooler months depends on three settings within an hour of each other: the long beaches of the coast, the dry stone of the mountains and the small whitewashed mosque at Al Bidyah.

Fujairah faces east, towards the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean beyond, and the Hajar range stands between it and the rest of the country. The drive from Dubai takes about two hours, and the change in landscape is complete: dunes give way to dark, folded rock, then to date palms and the coast. In October afternoons still reach the mid-thirties with sea air that can feel heavy by the water; from December to March the days settle into the high twenties and the nights cool enough for a long sleeve on a terrace. Rain is rare but arrives suddenly in the mountains when it does.

“The mountains and the sea ask different things of a garment on the same afternoon. Linen is one of the few cloths that answers both.”

— Pieter Petros, founder

Most visitors stay on the stretch of coast around Al Aqah in the north, where the resorts face Snoopy Island, a small rock a short swim or paddle from the beach and one of the most visited snorkelling spots in the country. Mornings here are spent in the water. PP swim shorts in Black serve the reef and the sunbed alike, and a linen shirt goes over them for the walk up to breakfast or the beach bar. The Cuba Linen Shirt in Pink, open at the collar, is the kind of colour the coast's bright light handles well.

The mountains need more coverage. The wadis behind the coast, the road to Dibba in the north and the protected valleys of Wadi Wurayah are reached on rough tracks and short walks across hot stone. Long, loose trousers protect against the rock and the sun at once: PP Casual Linen Trousers in Black, with closed shoes, and a shirt with sleeves. The men's linen collection holds both trouser lines and every shirt mentioned here. For a woman the HER Laos Linen Shirt in Blue, worn loose with long trousers or a long skirt, gives the same protection with more ease.

Al Bidyah Mosque sits at the foot of the hills north of Fujairah city, a small building of stone and mud brick with four low domes, often described as the oldest mosque still in use in the country. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times, and the dress expected is the same as at any mosque in the Emirates: arms and legs covered for everyone, and a headscarf for women, with coverings sometimes provided at the entrance. The watchtowers on the ridge behind it are worth the short climb. Fujairah Fort in the city and the Friday Market on the road towards Masafi, with its pottery and fruit stalls, make the rest of a morning inland.

Evenings return to the coast. Resort restaurants and terraces ask for smart, relaxed dress: a collared shirt and long trousers for men, a dress or a blouse with trousers for women. The Monte-Carlo Male in Vanille with PP Trousers 100% Linen in White suits a dinner on the sand, and for a woman the Amelia linen dress shirt in Dubarry or in Pink is worn simply as a dress. Women who prefer to keep the knee covered at dinner can choose the PP linen blouse in Lemon from the women's linen collection, with a full-length skirt.

Fujairah is often combined with a few nights in Ras Al Khaimah, on the other coast, or with a day trip north into the Musandam peninsula of Oman, whose fjords begin just beyond Dibba. The wardrobe for Musandam is the same as this one, with a little more weight on swim shorts for the dhow days. For those who want to see the PP collection in person before leaving, it is presented in Dubai at Park Hyatt Dubai and its Lagoon Beach Club, at Surf Club Dubai and at Sofitel The Palm Beach Resort.

From December the east coast settles into its mildest months. The sea stays warm enough for the swim out to Snoopy Island, and on clear mornings the ridges of the Hajar stand sharp behind Al Bidyah, close enough to count the watchtowers.
