What to Wear in Dubrovnik — The PP Wardrobe

On Dubrovnik's old city walls, harbour restaurants, and Elafiti boat trips — the Belgian linen wardrobe for Croatia's most beautiful city.

Dubrovnik operates at a specific elevation — literally and figuratively. The old city sits on a promontory above the Adriatic, its limestone walls and terracotta rooftops among the most photographed in Europe. The standard of dress among the people who come here with intention — not the cruise ship crowds but the visitors who stay and explore at the city's own pace — reflects an understanding that this is a place worth dressing for.

The heat in Dubrovnik in summer is the other defining condition. July and August bring temperatures regularly above 35 degrees, with the white limestone walls of the old city absorbing and radiating heat through the afternoon. The Stradun — the main limestone promenade running through the heart of the old city — is a social occasion as well as a physical one, and the wardrobe that carries it correctly is one that manages heat while remaining composed.

“Dubrovnik is a place worth dressing for. The wardrobe that acknowledges this is the wardrobe that belongs here.”

— Pieter Petros, founder

For the old city: a PP linen shirt in white or oyster, open at the collar, with linen shorts or linen trousers depending on the programme. The walk along the city walls — one of the great coastal walks in Europe — is a physical undertaking in summer heat. Natural linen breathes through this in a way that no synthetic fabric does. The same shirt carries from the walls to lunch at a restaurant on the harbour below without requiring a change.

For the evening in Dubrovnik: the restaurants in the old city — the terrace above the harbour, the tables set in a laneway between stone walls — have a register that rewards considered dress. A PP linen shirt in navy or a deeper natural, with linen trousers and leather shoes, reads correctly in this setting. The city's beauty sets a standard; the wardrobe should acknowledge it.

For the Elafiti islands and the boat trips from the old city harbour: the same linen shirt that works in the city works on the water. The transition from boat to shoreside restaurant and back again is one that natural linen handles without complaint.
