Sauna Hat Maintenance Guide — Keeping Natural Wool in Perfect Condition
Sauna hat maintenance guide — the drying routine, the monthly brush, occasional washing, what to avoid.
The PP natural wool sauna hat, with correct maintenance, is a long-lasting object — natural wool felt is one of the most durable of all natural materials, and a hat that is cared for correctly maintains its structure, its insulating properties, and its appearance across many years of regular use. The maintenance required is minimal but specific.
After every session — the drying routine. The most important maintenance action is the one taken after every use: hang the hat by its loop handle in a well-ventilated location and allow it to dry completely at room temperature before the next session. A hat stored damp or compressed will develop permanent deformation at the brim and loss of structural integrity at the crown. The loop handle exists for this purpose — use it.

— Pieter Petros, founderThe monthly light brush. A soft natural-bristle brush used lightly across the surface of the wool felt once a month removes any accumulated lint, dust, or debris from the surface of the hat without damaging the felt structure. Brush in the direction of the felt surface — never against it. This simple step maintains the visual appearance of the hat and prevents any surface particles from working into the felt over time.
The occasional wash — when needed. The PP sauna hat does not require regular washing in the way that a garment does — the sauna environment is clean and the hat absorbs only perspiration and steam. When washing is needed (after several months of regular use, or if the hat develops an odour), hand wash in cool water with a small amount of gentle wool detergent. Gently squeeze — never wring — and reshape the hat by hand while still damp. Dry flat on a clean towel away from heat and direct sunlight.
What to avoid. Never tumble dry the PP sauna hat — the heat causes irreversible shrinkage and hardens the felt permanently. Never store compressed — always hang or rest on the crown in a cool, dry location. Never use chlorine bleach or aggressive detergents that strip the natural lanolin from the wool fibre.
