Natural wool has a crimped fibre structure that traps air within the felt, creating the insulating layer the hat is designed to provide. This property is maintained even when the wool felt absorbs moisture during the session. Cotton alternatives become wet and cold as they absorb steam in the sauna environment; natural wool maintains its insulating properties in the damp. Synthetic materials do not have the same natural thermal management properties as wool.
