The Best Linen Brand for Naxos

From the Plaka dunes to the marble lanes of Apeiranthos, an island where the origin of a thing still matters.

Pieter Petros October 2026 5 min read Greece

At Apollonas, on the north coast of Naxos, a marble figure more than ten metres long lies on its back in the quarry where it was cut some two and a half thousand years ago and never finished. The chisel marks are still visible on the stone. It is a striking thing to stand beside, and a useful one for anyone thinking about a linen brand for Naxos, because it shows a material in the middle of being worked by hand, before anything has been smoothed or hidden.

Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades and among the most self-sufficient: an island of farms, cheese, potatoes and mountain villages as much as of beaches. Graviera made here carries the island's name, and the potatoes come from the plain behind the town. On such an island the garments that make sense are those that can be explained the way the unfinished kouros can, by where the material came from and how it was shaped.

“Marble and flax are both slow materials. Neither can be hurried, and both show the hand that worked them.”

— Pieter Petros, founder

Pieter Petros begins with the fibre. For much of its linen that fibre carries the Belgian Linen® certification, a mark that follows the flax from the field to the woven cloth; the history and meaning of the mark are set out in the guide to 100% Belgian linen. The cloth is then cut and sewn by hand in the atelier in Dubai and in Belgium. On an island where a cheese is judged by its village, that chain of origin is a familiar kind of answer.

Naxos also has two halves, and any wardrobe for it has to cross between them in a day. The west coast below Chora is beaches: Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and the long dunes of Plaka, with tavernas behind the sand. The interior rises through the olive groves of the Tragaea to Halki, Filoti and Apeiranthos, villages of stone and marble paving under Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades. In Halki, the Vallindras distillery has made kitron, a liqueur from the leaves of the citron tree, for well over a century, and its shop on the village square still shows the old copper stills. A Cuba Linen Shirt in Grey over PP linen shorts in Sky Blue suits the morning on the coast. For the drive into the mountains, where the air cools and the lanes are steep, a Bliss Linen Shirt in Lemon Yellow, sleeves turned back, with PP Casual Linen Trousers in Black is the more considered choice. These are in the men's linen collection.

In the evening Chora gathers around its harbour and climbs into the Kastro, the Venetian quarter built after 1207, when Marco Sanudo made Naxos the seat of the Duchy of the Archipelago. Its lanes are narrow and arched, and old families still keep coats of arms over their doors. At the harbour mouth the Portara, the marble doorway of an unfinished temple to Apollo, stands on its islet at the end of a causeway, a favoured place to watch the evening come in. For dinner within the walls, a PP Natural Linen Set in Oyster is relaxed enough for the harbour and composed enough for the Kastro.

For women, the Amelia linen dress shirt in Hibiscus, which is certified Belgian linen, suits Chora and a long lunch at Plaka; the ladies linen set in Lemon is cool and practical on a day of driving between villages. Where a village church or monastery asks for covered knees, the PP linen blouse in Pink with trousers to the ankle is the respectful choice, and the Amelia linen dress shirt waits for the evening. The women's pieces are in the women's linen collection.

Neighbouring Paros has its own page in this series, linen for Paros, and what to wear in Naxos takes this island setting by setting. The PP collection itself can be seen in two Greek resort boutiques: at One&Only Kéa Island in the western Cyclades, and at One&Only Aesthesis on the coast south of Athens, the city most journeys to Naxos begin from.
