Not all linen shirts are made from Belgian linen. Most linen shirts available at any price point are made from linen grown and processed in other producing regions — China, India, Eastern Europe — where the fibre is shorter-staple, the processing is faster, and the resulting fabric is coarser and less consistent than certified Belgian linen. What you see and feel. A Belgian linen shirt has a finer, more consistent surface than a short-staple alternative. The fabric drapes with more fluid weight. The surface has a warmth and depth of texture rather than the slight roughness and irregularity of coarser alternatives. In natural light, the difference between a quality certified Belgian linen shirt and a short-staple linen shirt is visible before the garment is put on.

What happens over time. Belgian linen's most distinctive property — and the one that most reliably confirms quality to anyone who has experienced it — is the progressive softening over time. A certified Belgian linen shirt washed and worn correctly through a season is a noticeably better shirt at the end of it than at the beginning. The long-staple fibre softens with each wash cycle, the drape becomes more fluid, and the shirt becomes progressively more personal. Short-staple linen alternatives do not have this improvement trajectory; they simply degrade.
