Wool vs Cotton Sauna Hat — Which Material Is Better?

Wool and cotton are both natural materials used in sauna hat construction — but they perform very differently in the sauna environment, and the difference is specific and practical rather than a matter of preference.
The wool advantage. Wool fibre has a crimped structure that naturally traps air between fibres, creating an insulating layer that slows heat transfer. In a sauna at 85 degrees, this insulating property directly benefits the sauna hat's core function. Wool also manages moisture effectively — absorbing perspiration and steam without becoming cold and clammy against the scalp, and releasing that moisture gradually through evaporation. Cotton's moisture absorption is high, but unlike wool, cotton becomes cold and heavy when saturated — in a high-humidity steam sauna, a cotton hat absorbs steam and sits wet and cold against the scalp rather than maintaining the insulating properties the hat is designed to provide. Cotton also does not hold its structural form under repeated steam exposure as well as wool felt — a cotton sauna hat typically loses its shape more quickly than a well-constructed wool felt alternative.
The verdict. For the sauna environment — particularly in traditional Finnish saunas above 80 degrees and in steam rooms — natural wool felt outperforms cotton by a significant margin across the three key criteria: thermal insulation, moisture management, and structural durability.
