What to Wear in St Tropez — The PP Wardrobe

On St Tropez’s effortless dress code — the port, Club 55, Pampelonne, and the linen wardrobe that moves between them.

St Tropez has a dress code built on apparent effortlessness. The town has been a gathering point for people who take dressing seriously for decades, and the aesthetic that has emerged is one where effort is present but invisible — the wardrobe that looks considered without looking like it tried.

The standard here is set on the port. The yachts that line the Vieux Port in July and August represent a specific context: the morning coffee at Sénéquier, the afternoon on the water, the evening at Club 55 or the terrace restaurants of the old town. Each setting tends to favour a slightly different approach, and the wardrobe that moves between them without changing is a linen one.

“The wardrobe that moves between the port, the beach clubs, and the evening terrace without changing is a linen one.”

— Pieter Petros, founder

The daytime: a linen shirt in white or the lighter naturals, worn with linen shorts or trousers. The lighter colours carry the Riviera light well — the particular brightness of southern France in summer — and the fabric breathes in the heat coming off the stone streets of the old town. At Club 55 and the beach clubs of Pampelonne, the same shirt worn open works as well as it does at dinner.

The evening: the port becomes more dressed as the day ends. A PP linen shirt in navy or a deeper tone, with well-cut linen trousers and a leather shoe, sits correctly at the restaurants along the Quai Suffren. This is not a context that requires a jacket — St Tropez has always been more relaxed in its evening standard than Monaco or Cannes. But it does reward a shirt with weight and drape to it.

The beach clubs at Pampelonne run from morning to well into the evening. The PP linen set — shirt and shorts in the same cloth — is the right format here. Intentional, natural, appropriate to the setting.
