What to Wear in Harbour Island and the Exumas — The Complete PP Wardrobe

Harbour Island, the Exumas, Eleuthera — the Out Islands of the Bahamas where natural luxury lives.

Pieter Petros July 2026 5 min read Destination

Harbour Island is the most celebrated of the Bahamian Out Islands — a three-mile island off the northeast coast of Eleuthera, accessible only by water taxi from the North Eleuthera airport. The pink sand beach on the Atlantic side, the pastel wooden colonial houses of Dunmore Town, and the small number of genuinely exceptional properties (The Dunmore, Pink Sands, Rock House) have made Harbour Island one of the most distinctive and quietly luxurious destinations in the Caribbean. The wardrobe that belongs here is natural, composed, and deeply connected to the island's specific character — which rewards understatement over anything loud or obviously resort-branded.

For Dunmore Town and the pink sand beach. The colonial wooden houses painted in pastel yellows and blues, the narrow lanes of Dunmore Town, the famous pink sand beach on the Atlantic side — white PP linen shirt over natural swim shorts, leather sandals. The extraordinary natural colour palette of Harbour Island rewards natural fabric in white and warm naturals that connect to the pink and coral tones of the sand and the painted architecture. For the evening at The Dunmore or Rock House — a navy PP linen shirt with linen trousers and leather loafers.

“Harbour Island is three miles long and accessible only by water taxi. The pink sand beach, the colonial houses of Dunmore Town, The Dunmore hotel — this is the Bahamas at its most quietly extraordinary.”

— Pieter Petros, founder

For the Exumas. The Exuma Cays — the 365 islands and cays stretching southeast from Nassau — are the most naturally spectacular chain in the Bahamas. The swimming pigs of Big Major Cay, the Thunderball Grotto of the James Bond films, the private island resorts and the yacht charter culture of the Exuma Sound. This is almost entirely a boat wardrobe: natural swim shorts and a white PP linen shirt for the boat deck, the anchorages, and the beach landings on the uninhabited cays. Leather deck shoes for the boat; leather sandals for the beach.

For Eleuthera. The long, narrow island between Harbour Island and the Exumas — the glass window bridge where the Atlantic and the Caribbean meet in completely different colours on either side, the surf breaks of the Atlantic coast, the quiet coves of the Caribbean side. A PP linen shirt in white or a warm natural with linen shorts and leather sandals for the island drives and beach explorations.

For women in the Out Islands. A PP ladies linen set in white or a warm natural for the beach and the boat; the Amelia dress shirt in a composed colourway for the Harbour Island evening at The Dunmore.
