What to Wear in Istanbul — Weather, the Grand Bazaar and the Bosphorus
Istanbul — Sultanahmet, the Bosphorus, Beyoğlu, the cultural dress context — the PP linen wardrobe.
What to wear in Istanbul depends chiefly on the season. Dress in breathable linen for the warm months, and add long sleeves and a light jacket from late autumn onwards. The city rewards comfortable, relaxed dressing whatever you are exploring — from the Grand Bazaar's labyrinthine lanes to a leisurely stroll along the Bosphorus.
Istanbul is one of the most extraordinary cities in the world — a city that spans two continents, where the Hagia Sophia faces the ancient Hippodrome across Sultanahmet Square, where the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Market operate alongside luxury hotels of the Çırağan Palace and the Four Seasons Sultanahmet, and where the Bosphorus strait connects the Black Sea to the Marmara. The wardrobe responds to the Istanbul summer heat and the city's specific combination of ancient heritage and contemporary luxury.
The cultural dress context. Istanbul's historic sites — the Topkapı Palace, the Grand Bazaar, the Spice Bazaar — reward neat, considered dressing, and the city's more traditional neighbourhoods carry a generally conservative tone. A PP linen shirt fully buttoned with linen trousers is appropriate for the palace visits and the more conservative cultural contexts of the city, where presentable dress is quietly appreciated throughout.
"Istanbul spans two continents. The Grand Bazaar, the Bosphorus strait, the Beyoğlu evening — natural linen fully buttoned with linen trousers carries the cultural context; the same shirt more loosely for the waterfront."
— Pieter Petros, founderIstanbul weather through the year
Istanbul has a temperate climate shaped by the two seas on either side of it. Average daytime highs sit around 26°C in June and close to 28°C in July and August, when the humidity off the water makes the heat feel heavier than the number suggests. September stays warm at around 25°C, October cools to roughly 19°C, and November to around 14°C. December, January and February are the cold, grey months, with highs near 9 to 11°C and the year's wettest weather; spring returns gradually, at around 16°C in April and 21°C in May. The evenings on the Bosphorus are always a few degrees cooler than the streets of the old city, and the wind along the water is constant.
What to wear in Istanbul now: late autumn and winter
In late October and November, Istanbul is a city of mild afternoons and cool evenings. A long-sleeved PP linen shirt with linen trousers carries a day in Sultanahmet comfortably, with a light jacket or a knit over the shoulders for the ferry and the evening. Linen does not belong only to summer: as our guide to linen in autumn explains, a long-sleeved linen shirt layers under wool as easily as it is worn alone. From December, the shirt becomes the layer beneath a proper coat, and closed shoes replace the summer loafer for wet cobblestones.
Summer in Istanbul
From June to September, the heat and humidity favour linen: it breathes, it dries quickly, and it keeps its composure through a long day of walking between the Topkapı Palace, the Basilica Cistern and the bazaar. Choose loose cuts and light colourways, carry a hat for the open squares, and keep a fully buttoned shirt and long trousers for the cooler, shaded interiors of the grand covered bazaars and historic sites.
For Sultanahmet and the historic peninsula. The Hagia Sophia, the Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar — the most concentrated historic heritage in the city. A PP linen shirt in a warm natural or earth tone with linen trousers and leather shoes. The Byzantine and Ottoman architecture rewards natural fabric in natural colourways.
For the Bosphorus and the waterfront. The boat trip on the Bosphorus — the classic Istanbul experience. A PP linen shirt in white or a warm natural with natural swim shorts and leather deck shoes for the boat; the same combination or linen trousers for the waterfront fish restaurants of Karaköy and Beşiktaş.
For Beyoğlu and the contemporary city. The galleries, restaurants, and rooftop bars of Beyoğlu, Karaköy, and Nişantaşı — Istanbul's contemporary luxury district. A navy PP linen shirt with linen trousers and leather shoes for the evening.
How to dress in Istanbul as a man
Away from the water, long linen trousers read as more considered in Istanbul than shorts, particularly in the older districts and covered bazaars. The most useful wardrobe is short: two or three linen shirts in white, navy and a warm natural, two pairs of linen trousers, swim shorts only for the boat or the hotel pool, and a pair of shoes that slip off easily when wandering the Grand Bazaar. A shirt fully buttoned at the collar and cuffs suits the Topkapı Palace courtyards in the morning; the same shirt with the collar open and the sleeves turned back serves the rooftop in the evening.
What to wear in Istanbul as a woman
For the historic district, a woman will feel entirely comfortable in covered, relaxed layers that suit both the heat and the pace of exploration. The PP linen blouse with a long skirt or long, loose trousers of her own is the right combination for Sultanahmet and the Süleymaniye quarter — the old stone streets, the cisterns, the grand courtyards. The Amelia linen dress shirt, a dress in itself and cut to the thigh, belongs to the other half of the day — the Bosphorus boat, lunch in Karaköy, the boutiques of Nişantaşı — and can be worn with trousers when the evening turns cool. A light scarf in the bag is always worth carrying as the temperature shifts from afternoon to dusk.
Sultanahmet is one of Istanbul's most rewarding neighbourhoods to explore on foot, with the Hippodrome, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar all within easy walking distance of one another. Comfortable shoes with easy slip-on soles make a long day of cobblestones considerably calmer. If Istanbul is the beginning of a longer journey through Turkey, our wardrobes for Cappadocia and Bodrum follow the same linen logic for the interior and the Aegean coast.
