What to Wear in Hydra — The Complete PP Wardrobe

Hydra — the horseshoe harbour, no vehicles, the swimming rocks, the Leonard Cohen connection — the PP linen wardrobe.

Hydra is, alongside Spetses, the most distinctive island in the Saronic Gulf — the stone mansions above the horseshoe harbour, the absence of motorised vehicles of any kind (not even bicycles are permitted), and the artist and creative community that has made Hydra a cultural reference point since the 1960s, when Leonard Cohen lived and worked there. The wardrobe that belongs in Hydra is natural, composed, and conscious of the island's specific visual and cultural character.

The harbour and the Hydriots. The crescent-shaped harbour of Hydra Town — the cafés under the plane trees, the cannons of the clock tower, the water taxis leaving for the swimming rocks. A PP linen shirt in white or a warm natural with linen shorts and leather sandals or loafers. The harbour is the social centre of the island; the morning coffee, the afternoon ouzo, and the evening dinner all take place within sight of the water.

“Hydra prohibits motorised vehicles of any kind. The island navigated on foot, by donkey, by water taxi — a deliberate choice to preserve the island's character. The PP wardrobe belongs here as naturally as anywhere in the world.”

— Pieter Petros, founder

For the mansions and the cultural heritage. Hydra's neo-classical and vernacular stone mansions — built by the island's eighteenth-century shipping merchants — are some of the finest examples of Greek vernacular architecture. The Lazaros Kountouriotis Historical Mansion and the Hydra Historical Archives museum. A PP linen shirt in a warm natural with linen trousers and leather shoes.

For the swimming rocks. Hydra has no sandy beaches — the swimming is from the rocks below the town and at the swimming areas accessible by water taxi. Natural swim shorts and a white PP linen shirt for the rock swimming context. Leather sandals with grip for the rock surfaces.

The Leonard Cohen connection. Cohen spent decades on Hydra; the island's creative aura remains. Natural fabric in natural colourways — the wardrobe that would have been at home in the Hydra of the 1960s as much as today.
