The boat party is a specific occasion with a specific set of requirements. It is neither the beach nor the dinner — it sits in the overlap between the two, and the wardrobe that handles it correctly must manage the physical environment of the boat (spray, movement, wind, sun) while reading as considered in the social environment of the event.

The physical requirements. A boat party takes place in the open sea or on a body of water — conditions that involve sun, wind, occasional spray, and sometimes the transition from hot outdoor to cold air-conditioned interior below decks. The garment needs to be comfortable in these conditions, able to get slightly damp without becoming miserable to wear, and appropriate for the movement and instability of a vessel at sea.

Natural linen manages all of these correctly. The fabric breathes in the sun, dries quickly when damp, manages the transition between the hot outdoor deck and the cooler interior, and reads as visually appropriate to a nautical context in the way that synthetic alternatives do not.

For men. A PP linen shirt in white or oyster over swim shorts or linen shorts — the combination that works from the moment of boarding to the lunch at anchor. Leather deck shoes or boat shoes. Nothing that will be destroyed by salt water or spray.

For women. A PP women's linen shirt or set in white or a warm natural — open over a swimsuit at the beach anchor, buttoned for the onboard lunch and the return to port. Leather sandals that handle the boat deck.

The evening boat party. If the occasion is a sunset cruise or a dinner onboard — navy PP linen for men, a deeper colourway for women. The transition from day boat to evening boat is made by the colourway and the accompaniment rather than a full outfit change.
