Sauna Hat Wool vs Other Materials — Why Natural Always Wins
Sauna Hat Wool vs Other Materials — Why Natural Always Wins
Why natural wool felt outperforms cotton, synthetic, and linen for sauna hat use — insulation, moisture management, and durability compared.
The choice of material in a sauna hat is not a minor detail — it determines how well the hat performs its primary function, how long it lasts, and whether it is appropriate for use in the conditions a sauna produces.
Natural wool felt. The traditional and most effective sauna hat material. Wool's fibrous structure traps air, providing genuine insulation against the intense heat at the top of the sauna. A natural wool felt hat delays the sensation of scalp overheating, allows longer sessions on the upper benches, and manages the moisture produced by steam and perspiration. Natural wool felt is also fully biodegradable and appropriate for the natural, wellness-oriented context of sauna use.
“Natural wool felt insulates in the sauna the way it insulates in cold — by trapping air within its fibrous structure. No synthetic alternative achieves this combination of insulation and moisture management.”
— Pieter Petros, founderCotton felt. Softer than wool felt but significantly less effective as a heat insulator. Cotton does not have the same air-trapping fibrous structure as wool. A cotton sauna hat provides some protection but performs considerably below wool in terms of heat insulation. Cotton is also more likely to become saturated with moisture and remain damp between sessions.
Synthetic felt (polyester, acrylic). The least appropriate material for a sauna hat. Synthetic felt provides minimal heat insulation, may become uncomfortable at sustained high temperatures, and does not manage moisture in the way wool does. Synthetic fibres in high heat can also release particles — an undesirable property in a steam environment.
Linen sauna hats. Occasionally available, linen provides better moisture management than cotton but lacks the insulation of wool. For the primary function of a sauna hat — protecting the head from extreme heat — linen does not match wool felt's performance.
The PP sauna hat is made from 100% natural wool felt. This is the material choice that the function justifies and that the context of natural wellness requires.
