The wool felt hat developed in the Finnish sauna tradition as a practical response to the high-temperature conditions of the löyly — the steam produced by throwing water over the heated stones. At 80 to 100 degrees Celsius, the head is the most vulnerable part of the body to the heat; the felt hat provided protection that allowed longer and more comfortable sessions. The hat's functional design — the tall crown creating an air column, the felt providing insulation — emerged from practical use rather than design.
The material tradition. Wool was the natural choice in a Nordic climate where sheep were a fundamental part of the agricultural economy. Wool felt's thermal management properties — the same properties that make it effective as cold-weather clothing — proved equally effective in the high-temperature sauna environment.
