The PP certified Belgian linen shirt gets better with every wash — this is not marketing language, it is the specific physical property of the flax fibre. The cellulose fibres in linen break down slightly with each wash cycle, becoming increasingly supple and increasingly soft over time. A PP linen shirt worn and washed for five years is a better shirt than it was on the day it arrived.

The washing instruction. Machine wash at 30 degrees Celsius — this is the correct default for certified Belgian linen. A 30-degree wash produces the most gradual and most even softening of the flax fibre over time. Do not wash above 30 degrees as a routine: 40 degrees is acceptable for a heavily soiled item on an occasional basis, not as the standard cycle. Do not use a delicate cycle: the standard 30-degree wash cycle is correct for linen.

The drying instruction. Tumble dry low, or hang dry. Hang dry is preferred: hang the shirt on a coat hanger immediately after the wash cycle and allow to dry in a well-ventilated space. The linen will dry within 2–4 hours and will emerge with the natural texture intact.

The ironing instruction. Iron linen while still slightly damp — the moisture allows the fibres to be pressed flat with minimal heat. A medium iron temperature is sufficient. Or: do not iron at all. The natural texture of Belgian linen — the slight unevenness, the natural wrinkle — is the visual character of the fabric. Wearing the shirt with its natural texture is not incorrect; it is the correct expression of what linen is.

The first wash note. The PP linen shirt may shrink approximately 2–3% on its first wash. This is normal and expected — the sizing allows for this. After the first wash, the shirt stabilises; subsequent wash cycles do not produce further significant shrinkage.
